VITO is the Reference Laboratory for the Flemish Government and has under the assignment three subtasks:
- advice the competent authority (Department of the Environment) on the recognition of laboratories;
- organize proficiency testing as external quality control for laboratories which are recognized and perform unannounced audits;
- develop, validation and dissemination of analysis and measurement methods
